Masuya Oren's Dance
In the castle town of Tsuwano, in Ishi-shû(modern Shimane Prefecture), Sasaki Hiraoka and Atsuya Masuya's daughter, Oren, are betrothed. However, Sasaki, a feudal lord, is dispatched to Edo under the Sankin Kôtai System (alternate year residence in Edo required of feudal lords) and breaks off the engagement. Oren orders forty-nine charmed nails and one hundred hammers, drives forty-eight of the nails into the wall and takes the remaining one to Edo. Sasaki still refuses to leave his house to meet her, so Oren turns into a snake, crosses the moat, and takes revenge on Sasaki.  |
