[Section VIII: Kagura in Northern Hiroshima Prefecture]
Surrender-the-Land Dance

According to Japanese mythology, Ôkuninushi-no-mikoto, a sixth generation god enshrined at Izumo-taisha and ruler of the land, is made to surrender the land to Ninigi-no-mikoto, Amaterasu-ômikami's grandson. He then goes into hiding. Amaterasu-ômikami orders Ninigi-no-mikoto to pull the High Plain of Heaven down to Takachihô, in Hiuga-no-kuni (modern Miyazaki Prefecture).

In this dance, Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto and Futsunushi-no-mikoto, leaders of the Advent of Amaterasu-ômikami's grandson, demand that Ôkuninushi-no-mikoto surrender the land. At first he refuses but eventually he complies and the land is finally returned through the mediation of Inasehagi-no-mikoto and the cooperation of Kotoshironushi-no-mikoto.
