Kitano Tenman-gû Shrine

Kitano Tenman-gû Shrine is the main shrine at which Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), Minister of the Right under emperors Uda and Daigo, is enshrined. He was enshrined here in 947 as the tutelary deity of the capital in fulfillment of an oracle by Emperor Murakami. (Omission) He is worshiped by the Japanese as "Tenjin-sama" (Heavenly God), the god of learning who embodies the ideal of "wakon kansai," or Japanese spirit and Chinese scholarship.
