The Eight-tailed Serpent
[Kisuki, Shimane Prefecture]

Izumo myths and Kisuki

According to the Kojiki, Susanowo-no-mikoto, who was expelled from the High Plain of Heaven, finds a pair of chopsticks floating in the Hi River. According to local legend, this happened in Ô-aza Shin'ichi, Kisuki,Ôhara County, Shimane Prefecture (former Aza Shin'ichi, Hinobori). A monument in Eight-tailed Serpent Park marks the spot. Also located in Kisuki are a mound where the snake's head is buried, called "Eight Ceders," and the snake's abode, called "Heaven's Abyss."
